Robert Henry Schaublin
November 22, 1911 – July 16, 2006
Robert Schaublin grew up in
Bluffton
,
Ohio
. He was an Eagle Scout and served as Scout Master for two years. In high
school, he was a member of the basketball team that won all of its games except
for the final State Basketball Tournament, where they lost by two points.
Bob graduated from
Bluffton
College
with a science major. He earned twelve varsity letters in football, basketball
and track. In 1985 he was inducted into the Bluffton College Sports Hall of
Fame.
After receiving his M.A. from
Ohio
State
, Bob taught science and coached at Rising Sun, Centerburg, and Marengo High
Schools in
Ohio
. World War II started and Robert left Marengo to serve as an athletic director
in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received a leave of absence in 1942 to come back
to Marengo to marry Evelyn Fuller and then returned to his tour of duty.
When the war was over, Bob became director of education and rehabilitation in
the
V.A.
Hospital
.
In 1949 he moved to
St. Clair Shores
,
Mich.
, where he served as high school principal at Lakeview for 28 years. Robert was
then called out of retirement to serve as interim superintendent and to help
pass the local school bond issue. The board named the new 2000-seat school
auditorium in his honor.
Robert and Evelyn then volunteered a year at Sheldon Jackson State College in
Sitka
,
Alaska
. Then they moved to a home on the bank of the St. Clair River where Bob sailed,
fished and had a large garden and orchard. A cabin in
Colorado
was enjoyed and Robert snow skied until he was past 80. Bob was active in many
professional and charitable organizations, along with serving as an elder in
Lakeshore Presbyterian Church.
In 2002, Bob and Evelyn moved to
Colorado
to be near their two daughters. Robert Schaublin is survived by his wife of 63
years, Evelyn, his daughter, Susan, her husband, Milton, grandchildren Charles,
Jessica, Jason, daughter, Sara, and her husband, Kenneth Moran. His grandson,
Daniel Stockmyer, preceded him in death.
In commenting on his years at Bluffton Collage and his later endeavors, Robert
noted, “
Bluffton
College
imbued me with a great interest in competitive sports along with clean
Christian living. This interest led me to teaching and coaching, and to become a
school administrator who developed a strong athletic program. I firmly believed
in good discipline and a strong, well-rounded academic and athletic program. The
school yearbook stated that you see Mr. Schaublin at just about every school
function, and that’s the way I stayed close to the kids.”
